Book Two, Chapter Seven, Stuck In A Gargun Lair With A Coracle And A Nearly Dead Goat

(Not recorded, but its not long after 1st May 1997 and D&JW were on way back from Wales)

Last time we abandoned the adventurers when the Neil Hamilton of Time met the Martin Bell of Destiny. We are beside a pool of barracuda and Zytsis got a new joke -

Question Whats bright on the outside and dim in the middle?

Answer Frost. Laugh, its a joke told by a homicidal dwarf.

So there we are on the edge of a large pool in a large cavern with several exits. Several of the exits are rather, how can I put it, rather wet. But still not quite the right passages, not quite those that Martyn dreamed of. We made the assumption that the alarm had not been raised in this part of the complex. ((These parts of the notes are mainly text accompanying a simple map.))

So Martyn picks a tunnel. We advance, Daniel carries the coracle and Martyn carries the goat. The Marching order is Zytsi, Martyn, Giles, Daniel, and Estalyn. Faf, Faf. We advance to another cavern room with a pool in the centre. It also has 4 Gargun in it. One runs away, Estalyn shoots it in the leg and it falls over (possibly in a serious mess) and the other 3 die. But Giles is a mess. Martyn gets a paste out and helps Giles. Go to next room, and then Martyn then thinks to First Aid Giles just before we get there. Acid geyser room - we pick our way across it carefully, timed between spurts (or whatever the gushes are called).

Along the tunnel beyond that for 100 ft. Then there was a side tunnel, which we initially ignored. The main tunnel went on for a short while before opening up into a flag stoned floored room with at least one Gargun guard. So we back tracked to the branching corridor and went along that. It T junctioned with a much wider corridor, with Gargun guards either side of our corridor. The party was precipitated into combat, and 2 more Gargun came down from deeper in the complex. Martyn forced his way into the corridor to attack the new comers leaving Giles and Zytsi to deal with the original 2 Gargun. Zytsi kills him. He and Martyn swap places and Martyn first aids himself. They all die.

((Now the notes are a map and a series of notes surrounding it.))

We went deeper into the complex, form the direction to 2 extra Gargun came from. 15 ft long the corridor it ends in a huge Throne Room, 100 ft x 100 ft. There was a parade of pillars all round the room. There is a pool and fountain in the centre of the room. To the north of this were stairs going down. In the middle of the south wall is an enormous dais with a throne on. There were double doors in the middle of the West and south walls. There were also nor Gargun here. Assuming the best we went straight to the double doors in the south wall, behind the throne.

Beyond was a south corridor/alcove before a largish antechamber room lined with pillars. We very quickly realise the nature of the trap in this room. However as we turn round to leave a minor hoard of Gargun are charging towards us. So there is only one thing to do - alternatively and illiterately - Collapse room, pillars crumble, doors lock. Back see Gargun in throne room. Go to other doors. Through, hold doors and lock them. Then turn round and see bridge and 8 Gargun. Sounds of screams behind door, and of falling rocks.

So we fight our way across the bridge and kill the Gargun. At last we have found somewhere that Martyn saw in his dreams, or perhaps it was the first place he admitted to. Anyway it was a large oval room with a river (or large stream) flowing through it, cutting it in two. Hence the requirement for a bridge. We find 2 secret doors. One has a crossbow trap the other side, obviously designed to go off when someone opened the door from the other side. We also heard Gargun footsteps from down the corridor. We decided that that was the wrong way. The other secret door also had a trap the other side. However that was a poison gas trap in a short stretch of corridor. This was messy.

We ran through the gas. Daniel had to drag Giles out, and had to use one of the three uses of his Bujoc Nightingale pouch to escape serious harm. Down the corridor, round the corner was a false door trap. Most of the corridor not covered by the poison gas was in fact a pit trap. Zytsi set off this pit trap. 30 ft pit with spikes. The boat is OK. Dont forget we still have the coracle and nearly dead (and definitely unconscious and half drowned) goat. Faf, Faf. We get out.

There is about a 10 ft stretch of corridor not in poison gas or on top of the pit trap. At this point there is a secret door. Beyond this is a 35 ft stretch of corridor which opened out into a larger room. We cant see much of this room, and we stood with the door open and discussed the situation. Giles charged up to the room. He discovered that the floor was slippery, the Gargun guard at the end of the corridor stuck his hand round and dropped his lighted torch into to the oil on the floor and stood back.

Fire trap. Giles burnt and unconscious. Zytsi ditto. Martyn killed Gargun. The Fire last 4 rounds. Estalyn and Daniel, with the goat and coracle stood between the poison gas, the pit trap and the fire trap and waited it all out.

This corridor led us into a big complex with Gargun Eggs and the Queen. We smashed the eggs and Zytsi killed the Queen - who gave a very loud dying scream. There were no other Gargun down here. Now since Martyns dream was how to get the armour all we have to do is wait for the leader to turn up and kill him and any guards he may have with him.

Spend long time healing. Martyn turns blue as he burns of his Con to heal people. The Gargun with the armour on turns up and Martyn closes with him. As does everyone else, but rather less nobly in the leaders flanks and rear. Even Daniel was turning blue and singing at him.

Zytsi killed the Gargun King. He hit him and got a critical. He said he was going to roll 96 and he did roll 96. Then he fell over due to bleeding as his wounds opened and bleed. On 0 exactly Martyn

Giles 8 per round opens Martyn heals it at 1 per min closure. ends on 0.
